The Queens Beasts are mythological creatures attributed to past ancestral Royal Monarchs. The tradition represents the history and heritage of the Royal Family. In 2016, the Royal Mint issued the 1st of a 10 coin series celebrating the Queens Beasts.
Through family lineage, the first beast traces back to the ”Lion of England” attributed to King Richard I, also known as “Richard the lionheart”.
In heraldry, the Griffin was a Sentinel and guardian of royal sacred objects. The fearsome beast was part lion and part eagle with ferocious strength. The Griffin was attributed to King Edward III in the 14th century.
The 2021 Griffin of Edward 1/4 oz gold coin is proof struck in .9999 pure gold. The obverse is graced with the fifth effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. The reverse features a depiction of the Griffin designed by Jody Clark.
