The Isle of Man is one of the smallest nations in the world with a population estimated around 85,000. Despite its small size, the Isle of Man has issued some of the most unique gold and silver coins over the years.
The angel coin was issued in 1465 by order of King Edward IV. It had replaced the gold Noble which was the most widely used gold coin at the time.
The Angel coin was popular throughout the Renaissance era due to widespread belief in its healing properties. Kings often held ceremonies handing out gold angels to the sick and disabled. It was also believed to cure tuberculosis, which was for referred to as “King’s evil” at the time.
Fast forward to the modern day angel coin –
The Pobjoy Mint began minting the Angel coin in 1984 featuring a beautiful new design. It quickly became a favorite among coin enthusiasts and collectors around the globe.
The coin’s reverse features an image of Archangel Michael slaying a dragon with a sphere. The obverse bears an effigy of his majesty, King Charles III. The portrait is used exclusively on coins issued by the Isle of Man.
