ROYAL CANADIAN MINT

ROYAL CANADIAN MINT

ROYAL CANADIAN MINT – OTTAWA BRANCH

THE ROYAL CANADIAN MINT HAS ESTABLISHED ITSELF AS ONE OF THE WORLD’S TOP LEADING MINTS.  ASIDE FROM PRODUCING CIRCULATING COINS FOR CANADA AND SEVERAL OTHER COUNTRIES,  THE ROYAL CANADIAN MINT HAS ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR AND SUCCESSFUL BULLION PROGRAMS IN THE WORLD.  THEY MANUFACTURE COINS AND BARS, STRUCK IN  GOLD, SILVER, PLATINUM, AND PALLADIUM  IN A VARIETY OF SIZES AND DESIGNS.

The first official Canadian Mint was the Ottawa branch, which opened in 1908. Even after declaring independence, it took Canada another two decades to break free from British rule in 1931. The Mint’s inability to generate profits led to its conversion into a Crown Corporation.

The Royal Canadian Mint became a Crown corporation in April 1969. The majority of power was given to the public with less regulation. This would eventually take the company in a new direction. The mint began a bullion program that produced collector- and investor-grade Canadian coins.

In 1976, due to increasing demand, a second branch opened in Winnipeg. The building’s modern design by Architect Etienne Gaboury features a striking triangular building that rises up over a surrounding prairie. The Winnipeg branch produces all of Canada’s circulating coins, while the Ottawa facility produces collector-grade coins.

The Royal Canadian Mint is known for the high quality and purity of its coins. They were the first to make a .99999 fine gold coin. In 1982, they began releasing gold coins with a purity of .9999. The Royal Canadian Mint has created several of the most popular coin series, including the world-famous Canadian Maple Leaf.

The gold Maple Leaf was introduced in 1979 and quickly became the most popular and widely collected gold coin in the world. The classic design of the maple leaf has remained virtually unchanged since its debut. The maple leaf is struck in gold, silver, platinum, and palladium in a variety of sizes.

Aside from the Maple Leaf, the Royal Canadian Mint produces several other popular coin series, including the Canadian Wildlife series. The series celebrates Canada’s rich and diverse wildlife. From arctic predators to birds of prey to the creatures of the north, they portray some of Canada’s majestic creatures. You can view our selection of Royal Canadian Mint coins here.
