ROYAL CANADIAN MINT
The Royal Canadian Mint is among the world’s top premiere mints. Aside from producing circulating coins, the Royal Canadian Mint manufactures coins for over a dozen countries around the world. Over the last four decades, they have established one of the most successful bullion programs, producing a variety of coins and bars struck in gold, silver, platinum and Palladium.
The first official Canadian Mint was the Ottawa branch, which opened in 1908. Although Canada has declared independence, it would take another 20 years to break free from British rule in 1931. The Royal Canadian Mint was converted into a Crown Corporation due to its inability to generate a profit.
As a Crown Corporation, the majority of power was given to the public with less regulation. This would eventually take the company in a new direction. The Royal Canadian mint began a bullion program that produced collector- and investor-grade Canadian coins.
In 1976, due to increasing demand, a second branch was opened in Winnipeg. The building’s modern design by Architect Etienne Gaboury featured a striking triangular building rising up over a surrounding prairie. Today, the Winnipeg branch produces all of Canada’s circulating coins, while the Ottawa facility produces collector-grade coins.
The Royal Canadian Mint is known for the high quality and purity of its coins. They were the first to create a gold coin with a purity of. .99999 fine gold coin. Since 1982, the majority of their gold and silver coins have been struck with .9999 purity. The Royal Canadian Mint is behind some of the most popular and widely sought after coin series including
Canadian National coin, the Maple Leaf.
The gold Maple Leaf was introduced in 1979 and quickly became the most popular and widely collected gold coin in the world. The classic design of the maple leaf has remained virtually unchanged since its debut. The maple leaf is struck in gold, silver, platinum, and palladium in a variety of sizes.
Canada’s rich and diverse Wildlife has been the inspiration for many of the Royal Canadian mints coin series, most notably the “Canadian Wildlife” series.
