The British adopted Britannia as their national symbol during the 18th century. However her story goes back quite a bit. The first Britannia was struck on bronze coins by the Romans in the first century A.D. Of the countless designs throughout the years, she’s almost always depicted holding a trident and shield.

The 2024 Britannia is struck in ten troy ounce of .999 pure silver in a proof like finish. The obverse features the first official portrait of King Charles III. The reverse features the modern day Britannia design.  She’s depicted in forward relief wearing a Corinthian helmet with the trident in one hand and a Union Jack shield in the other.

The 2024 Britannia has The Royal Mint’s latest security features. A laser inscribed Latin phrase,” Decus Et Tutamen” is etched along the inner rim of the coin. Surface animations on the backfield mimic ocean waves with movement of the coin. It features a laser engraved privy mark of a trident, that changes to a padlock with a tilt of the coin…
