The Isle of Man is one of the world’s smallest island nations, with a population of approximately 85,000 as of 2023. Despite its small size, the Isle of Man has issued some of the most unique silver and gold coins over the years.
Originally known as the Noble Angel, King Edward IV issued the Angel coin in the 15th century. It replaced the most often used gold coin at the time, the gold Noble.
The Angel coin was popular due to widespread belief in its healing properties. Kings held ceremonies where they gave the gold coin to the sick and disabled, believing it would cure tuberculosis, known as “King’s evil” at the time.
The Pobjoy Mint began producing the Angel coin in 1984 featuring a new design. It’s regarded as one of the most beautiful coins designs .
The 2024 Angel coin is struck in .5 grams of .999 pure gold by the Tower mint. The coin’s reverse features an enhanced image of Archangel Michael slaying a dragon. The obverse bears the first official portrait of King Charles III.
