The Royal Mint of England produced the first gold sovereign in 1489 by order of King Henry VII. The original gold Sovereign remained in circulation during the reign of several rulers until 1603.
The gold Sovereign was put back in circulation in 1817 after being redesigned by artist Benedetto Pistrucci. Inspired by a famous scene, the design featured St. George on horseback slaying a dragon. The stunning new design has since captivated people all over the world. The Sovereign is considered among the most beautiful coin designs ever struck.
The featured 1986 half gold Sovereign is graced with the 4th effigy of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. The reverse side depicts St George on horseback as he slays a dragon.
Both the Sovereign and half Sovereign have been in circulation for over two centuries. Aside from a few commemorative and Jubilee years, it has kept its original design of St George and the Dragon. Today, the Sovereign is still regarded as one of the most beautiful coins ever struck.
