The first gold sovereign was struck in 1489 by order of King Henry VII and remained in circulation during the reigns of several Monarchs.
In 1817, the Sovereign was redesigned by Benedetto Pistrucci and put back into circulation. The new design was extremely popular and is regarded as one of the most beautiful coin design ever struck.
The Sovereign has remained in circulation for over two centuries. Aside from Jubilee and commemorative years, the reverse still features the original Pistrucci design of St. George on horseback as he slays a Dragon.
For the first time in over 6 centuries, the British sovereign is available in .999 pure silver struck in a proof finish. The coin’s obverse side bears the first official portrait of King Charles III. The reverse side features the iconic St George and the Dragon image.
The 2025 1/4 oz silver Sovereign proof has a limited mintage of only 50,000 coins. Direct from the Royal Mint, each Sovereign arrives in its original capsule housed in an elegant clamshell display box along with the certificate of authenticity.
