The Coinage Act of 1792 authorized the issuance of the half Disme during the presidency of George Washington. Less than 5,000 coins were minted as somewhat of a pilot program. Thomas Jefferson received the first 1500 coins. Less than 200 coins still exist with many selling well over a million dollars.
