Although dated 1804, the draped bust was actually struck during the 1830s. Using the original die, a small number of coins were struck with the 1804 date intended as gifts for diplomats and dignitaries. A similar version would eventually replace the Flowing Hair silver dollar.
The obverse features a beautiful depiction of Lady Liberty in a right side profile. The reverse features an eagle with its wings outstretched. 13 stars representing the first colonies are above the eagle along with “United States of America” along the outer edge.
The featured tribute is struck by the Intaglio mint. They’re known for their Ultra High-Relief piedforts of early US coins. The razor sharp design along with the high relief brings out many intricate details that often go unnoticed in smaller versions.
