In the 15th century, King Edward IV issued the Angel coin. Originally known as the Noble Angel, it replaced the gold Noble which was the most widely used gold coin at the time.
The Angel coin was immensely popular due to widespread belief in its healing properties. Kings often held ceremonies giving gold Angel coins to the sick and disabled, believing it would cure tuberculosis, known as “King’s evil” at the time.
It remains more popular today with its status as being the longest issued coin in history. The Angel coin has released a coin each and every year for over four centuries. In earlier years, they were issued in only gold with the first silver Angel appearing in the 18th century.
Over the years, a variety of mints have issued the Angel coin. The Pobjoy Mint began minting the Angel coin in 1984 with a new design. People widely regard it as one of the most beautiful coin designs ever struck. The Tower of London has been issuing the Angel coin since 2018.
The 1984 gold Angel is proof struck in 1/10 oz of .999 pure gold by the Pobjoy mint. The coin’s reverse features an enhanced image of Archangel Michael slaying a dragon. The obverse is graced with the fifth Effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.
