The first gold sovereign was struck in 1489 by order of King Henry VII and remained in circulation during the reigns of several monarchs.
The Sovereign was redesigned by Benedetto Pistrucci and put back into circulation in 1817. The new popular design is regarded as one of the most beautiful coins ever struck.
The Royal Mint has produced the Sovereign for over two centuries. Aside from Jubilee and commemorative years, it still features the original St. George and the Dragon design.
The featured 2009 half gold sovereign is proof struck and absolutely remarkable. The reverse has a depiction of St. George on horseback as he slays a dragon. The obverse features the fourth effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.
