The Krugerrand was first minted in 1967, with the purpose of introducing South African gold on the world stage. It did just that. It’s estimated that in the early 1980s, three-quarters of the world’s gold coins were African Krugerrands.
In 2017, the Krugerrand was minted in .999 silver to much to collectors delight. The obverse features the South African Republic’s first president, Paul Kruger. The African springbok antelope is featured on the reverse.
2017 was also the start of the silver bullion program. Over 10 million brilliant uncirculated coins were a struck as well as a proof like anniversary edition. The special edition has a “50” privy mark with a limited mintage of 1 million coins. It’s one of only 2 key date Krugerrands and highly sought after.
