The Masterpiece series celebrates one of the Royal Mints greatest engravers, William Wyon. The Three Graces was the first release of the series. Subsequent designs included Una and the Lion and the Gothic Crown, perhaps his most famous design. Queen Victoria personally requested that he design the coin for her 10-year anniversary on the British throne..
The Three Graces was one of his earlier design and was barely noticed at first. Its believed that less than 100 coins were struck. He designed the coin in honor of the unification between England and Ireland. The theme was inspired by Greek mythology, with the 3 Graces representing the daughters of Zeus. The 3 goddesses were capable of bestowing their virtues onto others as well as gifts for humanity.
