Just over 300 years ago, the British adopted Britannia as their national symbol. However, her story goes back quite a bit. Roman bronze coins from the first century A.D. contain the earliest known Britannia design.
Although the gold sovereign has long been considered Britain’s flagship coin, the Britannia is the modern day signature coin from the Royal Mint. More than just a coin, Britannia is a symbol of British culture, history, and pride.
The 2021 Britannia is struck in 1/10 oz of .9999 pure gold. The fifth effigy of Queen Elizabeth II graces the obverse. The reverse features the modern day image of Britannia, slightly enhanced. With the Royal Mint’s latest security features, it’s one of the most secure coins in the world.
A laser inscribed phrase in Latin was added along the coin’s edge. The back field’s visual effects mimic ocean waves with a coin tilt. A micro engraved privy mark with a holographic effect was also added. Depending on the angle of view, the privy changes from a padlock to a trident head.
The 2021 Britannia is finished with a beautiful luster giving the coin a proof-like appearance. Brilliant uncirculated and in spectacular condition, the coin arrives in a new airtight capsule. For added protection, the coin is housed in a new Guardhouse display box in a mahogany finish.
