The British adopted Britannia as their national symbol during the 18th century. However her story goes back quite a bit. The first Britannia was struck on bronze coins by the Romans in the first century A.D.
The 2024 Britannia is struck in one troy ounce of .999 pure silver in a proof like finish. The obverse side is graced the 5th official portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
The reverse side of the coin features the modern day Britannia image. Britannia is depicted in a forward stance wearing a Corinthian helmet yielding a trident in one hand and a Union Jack shield in the other.
The 2023 Britannia has the latest security features including a laser inscribed Latin phrase “Decus Et Tutamen” etched along the inner rim. Surface animations on the backfield mimic ocean waves in motion. A recently added laser engraved privy mark changes from a trident to a padlock with a tilt of the coin.
