The Buffalo Indian design was created by sculptor James Earle Fraser in 1911. While spending a day in New York’s Central Park, Frazier used his childhood memories traveling the Frontiers with his father where they encountered Indian tribes.

He stated that the Indian was a combination of three men; Iron Tall, Big Tree and Two Moons.  He designed the reverse side after encountering a bison named black diamond at the Bronx Zoo.

The iconic Buffalo Indian design first appeared on the 1913 Buffalo nickel remaining in circulation until 1938.  The Buffalo Indian is one of the most replicated coin designs. Countless mints continue to produce coins, rounds, and bars featuring the famous image.
