During the Crusades, the Knights of Malta used the Maltese cross to set themselves apart from the enemy. Over the years, it became a symbol of heroism, given for acts of courage and valor. The island of Malta eventually added the iconic symbol to its coat of arms.
The cross consists of four V-shaped patterns converging at the center, resulting in a unique 8-pointed cross. The eight points represent the virtues that the knights would abide by. The reverse features an image of the cross, with Malta’s coat of arms on the obverse.
