Britannia has been the national symbol of Great Britain since the 18th century. However
her story goes back much further. The first Britannia was struck on bronze coins by
the Romans in the first century A.D.

The modern Britannia was designed by famed coin artist Philip Nathan. It was originally
released in 1987 as a 1 oz. gold coin. A decade later, in 1997, the first silver Britannia was
struck in a silver proof finish. Beginning in 1998, and all subsequent even-numbered years
that followed have the same image of Britannia, with minor enhancements over the years.

Prior to 2012, odd numbered years featured a different design that were struck in low numbers.
The featured 2009 Britannia has a mintage of 100,000 and is considered one of the most beautiful
design of the series. It’s extremely rare and one of the most sought after coins by enthusiasts and
collectors around the world.

The 2009 Britannia is a rendition of the 1998 design featuring Britannia on a chariot pulled by
horses. A third coin  featuring the same design was released in 2017 celebrating the 20 year
anniversary of its release.
