The legendary figure of Britannia first appeared as a personification of the Roman province of Britain on a Roman Imperial coin of the Emperor Hadrian in the 12th century.

In 1987, The Royal Mint launched the modern Gold Britannia coin featuring the iconic standing female warrior design by sculptor Philip Nathan.

The face value £25 coin contains one quarter ounce (7.776g) of fine gold and the £10 coin contains one tenth ounce of gold (3.110g).
