In the 15th century, King Edward IV issued the Angel coin. Originally known as the Noble Angel, it replaced the gold Noble which was the most widely used gold coin at the time.
The Angel coin was immensely popular due to widespread belief in its healing properties. Kings often held ceremonies giving gold Angel coins to the sick and disabled, believing it would cure tuberculosis, a disease known as “King’s evil” at the time.
The Pobjoy Mint began minting the Angel coin in 1984 with a new design. It’s widely regarded as one of the most beautiful coin designs ever minted.
The 2014 Angel coin is struck in 1 troy oz of .999 fine silver by the Pobjoy mint. The coin’s reverse features an enhanced image of Archangel Michael slaying a dragon. The obverse is graced with the fifth Effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.
