In the fifteenth century, King Edward IV ordered a new coin to be issued replacing the gold noble. The result was one of the most popular and fascinating coins ever struck, the gold Angel.
The Angel coin was immensely popular due to widespread belief in its healing properties. Ceremonies were held with Kings giving the coins to the sick and disabled. Many believed they would cure tuberculosis, known as “King’s evil” at the time.In 1984, the Pobjoy Mint collaborated with the Isle of Man and introduced a redesigned angel coin in silver featuring the iconic image. The reverse features a depiction of Archangel Michael slaying a dragon, who is actually the devil in disguise.
The obverse is graced with the 5th effigy of Queen Elizabeth II designed by Jody Clark. Since the modern silver angel debuted in 1984, it was struck by the Pobjoy Mint. This year’s release was struck by the Tower Mint of London.
The 2018 Isle of Man Silver Angel coin is struck in one troy ounce of .999 fine silver with a proof like finish. Each coin is absolutely pristine and in remarkable condition. It arrives in a brand new Direct Fit capsule.
