The British gold sovereign is one of the oldest and most popular gold coins cherished by collectors, investors, and coin enthusiasts around the world. The first gold sovereign was struck in 1489 by order of King Henry VII and remained in circulation during the reigns of several monarchs.
In 1817, the sovereign was redesigned by Benedetto Pistrucci, featuring an image of St. George on horseback slaying a dragon. The iconic image is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful coin designs and has remained unchanged to this day.
The Royal Mint has produced both the full sovereign and half sovereign for over two centuries. Aside from Jubilee and commemorative years, it still features the original St. George and the Dragon design.
The featured 2008 half gold sovereign is proof struck and absolutely remarkable. The reverse has a depiction of St. George on horseback as he slays a dragon. The obverse features the fourth effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.
Each coin arrives in the original mint-issued capsule and housed in the Royal Mint display box along with the certificate of authenticity.
