Britannia has been the national symbol of Great Britain since the 18th century. However, her story goes back much further. The first Britannia was struck on bronze coins by the Romans in the first century A.D.
The modern Britannia was designed by famed coin artist Philip Nathan. It was released in 1987 as a 1 oz. gold coin.
In 1997, the first silver Britannia was struck. The second-year issue in 1998 and all even-numbered years that followed feature the same image of Britannia holding both a trident and a shield.
Before 2012, the odd-numbered years showcased a unique design in limited quantities, making it one of the most coveted Britannias. The 2009 “chariot” Britannia has a mintage of 100,000 with less than 7,000 proofs.
The 2009 Britannia is proof struck in 1 troy ounce of .958 silver. A total of just 6,984 proof coins were struck, making the 2009 Britannia proof one of the most sought after of the series.
The featured 2009 Britannia is in absolutely remarkable condition, just as the day it was minted. The coin arrives in a new airtight capsule
