The original Three Graces was designed in 1817 by William Wyon, one of the greatest engravers in history. As one of his earlier designs, the coin celebrated the unification between England and Ireland.
The theme of the coin was inspired by Greek mythology, with the 3 Graces representing the daughters of Zeus. The 3 goddesses were capable of bestowing their virtues onto others as well as gifts for humanity.
