The British gold Sovereign is one of the most popular coins ever minted. The first sovereign was struck in 1489 by order of King Henry VII and remained in circulation during the reigns of several monarchs.
The Sovereign was redesigned in 1817 by Benedetto Pistrucci with a new, fascinating design. His depiction of a famous scene featuring St. George on horseback slaying a dragon has captivated collectors and investors throughout the world.
Aside from a few commemorative issues, the iconic design has remained on the gold sovereign for over two centuries.
The Memorial Gold Sovereign is the second of two coins issued by the Royal Mint in 2022. The obverse features the first official portrait of King Charles III designed by Martin Jennings. The effigy follows a long-standing tradition, with the king facing left, opposite his mother, the queen.
In honor of the late queen, the coin was struck with the reinterpretation of the British royal arms designed by Jody Clark. Similar to Timothy Noad’s Royal Arms design from the Platinum Jubilee, it features the Tudor crown. Heraldic symbols and motifs surrounding the coin’s edge make it easily distinguishable from Timothy Noad’s design.
Aside from its scarcity, the Memorial Gold Sovereign is favored among collectors and investors for its historical significance. Typically, there’s only one sovereign issued in a given year with very few exceptions. With the Queen’s passing and the ascension of King Charles III, the Royal Mint authorized a second sovereign to commemorate the historic event.
