The original Una and the Lion coin was struck in 1839 and designed by William Wyon.  All renditions that followed have featured a depiction of Queen Victoria representing the character Una.  For the first time, a new version of the iconic design was struck featuring Queen Elizabeth II as the character Una.

The new design is featured on the 2021 gold Sovereign proof from the Commonwealth Mint. The special edition gold Sovereign celebrates the Queen’s 95th birthday and is the only Sovereign struck in .9999 pure 24-karat gold.

This spectacular coin was designed by famed artist Jody Clark. He is best known for designing the Fifth Effigy of the late Queen Elizabeth II.

The 2021 Alderney Queen Elizabeth II Gold Sovereign Proof is a remarkable coin with historical significance. It marks the first time that the same artist designed both sides of a British coin.
