Britannia has been the national symbol of Great Britain since the 18th century. However, her story goes back much further. The first Britannia was struck on bronze coins by the Romans in the first century A.D.
The modern-day Britannia was designed by famed coin artist Philip Nathan. It was originally released in 1987 as a 1 oz gold coin. A decade later, in 1997, the first silver Britannia was struck in a proof finish. The bullion program began the following year in 1998.
Beginning in 2013, the Britannia’s purity was increased to .999 fine, with the design remaining the same ever since. Prior to 2013, odd-numbered years featured new designs from different artists minted in low numbers. Those 1-off designs are extremely rare and highly collectible.
Today, only Britannia proofs feature different designs highly sought after among coin enthusiasts and collectors. The featured 2024 Britannia is proof struck in 1 troy ounce of .999 fine silver. The obverse features the first official portrait of King Charles III.
The new reverse design by Marie Alice Harrel embraces the traditional maritime theme. Britannia is portrayed in a left side profile looking out at sea. An oncoming wave encircles Britannia, merging seamlessly with the Corinthian helmet. A truly beautiful representation of Britannia’s long-time connection to the sea.
The featured 2024 Britannia is direct from the mint. Every coin is inspected and guaranteed to arrive in remarkable condition, free of any defects. The coin arrives encapsulated and housed in the Royal Mint’s signature display box. An information booklet and CoA are also included.
